Happy birthday, Yes We Cant!

Five years ago, we decided to start up a poetry night in Walsall, and bring the best in poetry and spoken word to our part of the world. The night would be pay-as-you-feel so that no-one was excluded because they were skint, and each month we’d have a headline poet, an ‘Alf Ender, and ten open-mic spots.

We called our night Yes We Cant. Why? Because we were in a pub called the Pretty Bricks, and a cant is a type of brick, and because ‘cant’ means ‘blather’ and this would be a night of blathering and poetry. Which is exactly what it’s been. Since that first night in June 2017 we’ve brought over fifty of the UK’s best poets to headline our night, given over fifty ‘Alf Enders (yes, it’s another brick pun) a platform to promote their latest pamphlet, and heard from countless open-mic poets. Thanks to the generosity of our audiences, we’ve been able to pay our feature poets and raise money for local charities.

In two weeks, we celebrate five years of bringing top-notch poetry to the Black Country. To mark the occasion, we’re bringing back the two poets who featured on that very first night five years ago. Jonny Fluffypunk will be our feature poet, while Paul Francis takes the ‘Alf Ender slot as he did back in June 2017. It’s going to be a great night of poetry, it’s going to be online, it should be going in your diary right now. Honestly. Come and join us. We’d love to see you there.
