Yes, We Cant is our regular spoken word night at The Pretty Bricks in Walsall, and it’s built a well-deserved reputation for bringing top-notch poetry and spoken word to our region. It’s also a lot of fun, and is – as far as we know – the only poetry night in the country with three references to bricks.
Each month we bring you a headline guest, plucked from among the best the poetry world has to offer, an ‘Alf Ender (a local poet with a book or books for sale) and ten open mic spots, as well as our famous eight-line poetry competition and its truly amazing prizes. Past headliners read like a line-up of the poetry great and good: Elvis McGonagall, The Antipoet, Melanie Branton, Johnny Fluffypunk, Brenda Read-Brown, and many, many more.
Six of the open mic slots are made available before the event. Hit us up on social media, email or shouting loudly and we will put you down. The other four open mic slots are up for grabs on the night on a first come, first served basis and they get snapped up fast. Turn up early if you want one. (to date, no-one has had to bring camping equipment and start queuing on the Saturday night, but it’s only a matter of time).
Yes, We Cant is on the first Sunday of each month. Doors are at 6.45pm for a 7.30pm start and – as Monday is a school day – we finish by 9.30pm so everyone can get a good night’s sleep (or grab another pint and have a blather). We pass the hat round to help pay the headline poet, and ask people to give as generously as they can. Come along and see what you’ve been missing!
